Brushing Your Dog’s Teeth at Home

Dental issues are quite common amongst our canine companions. It’s up to you to keep Fido’s mouth healthy—brushing his teeth is one of the best ways to do that! Learn how below from your veterinarian Marietta, GA.

Preparation

First, head to your local pet supply store to pick up a dog toothbrush and a canine-formulated toothpaste. You’ll also need a few tasty dog treats to reward your pooch after a successful brushing.

Brushing

Begin by simply massaging your dog’s teeth and gums with your finger; this will get him used to the sensation of brushing. Slowly, introduce the paste to allow Fido to get acclimated to the taste and smell. When he’s ready, brush each tooth with the brush and paste. Only focus on the outer tooth surfaces, where plaque tends to accumulate.

Repeat and Reward

Work your way around your dog’s mouth to all the teeth. After brushing is over, be sure to offer your pooch a few tasty dog treats—this will convince him that brushing results in a fun reward!
