Brushing Your Dog’s Teeth

Were you aware that you can brush your dog’s teeth? It’s one of the absolute best ways to keep your canine companion’s pearly whites in good condition in between veterinary cleanings. Here, your Omaha, NE veterinarian tells you how.

Gather Supplies

First, purchase a canine-formulated toothpaste (ask your vet for a recommendation) and a dog toothbrush at your local pet supply store. You’ll also want a few dog treats on hand.

Getting Started

Start by massaging your dog’s gums and teeth with your finger to get him used to the sensation of brushing. (Try dipping your finger in a bit of chicken broth to make it more enticing.) When Fido is ready, dab a bit of the paste onto your finger. Next, put the paste on the brush and give one area of the mouth a quick scrub. Focus on the outer tooth surfaces, where plaque tends to build up most.

Repeat and Reward

Brush each area of your dog’s mouth, taking breaks in between if necessary. Be sure to reward your pooch with a few dog treats for a job well done!
