Cat Myths You Shouldn’t Believe

Our feline friends can be somewhat mysterious and aloof. We think this may be why so many myths have cropped up around them! Here, your Indianapolis, IN vet sets the record straight on three common cat misconceptions.

Cats Always Land on Their Feet

While cats are poised and graceful, they don’t always land on their feet. They can slip and fall like any other animal! In fact, shorter falls are the most dangerous, because a cat may not have time to right himself before impact.

Cats Love Milk

This may be partially true—there’s a good chance your cat will adore lapping up milk if it’s offered to him. However, milk and cats don’t mix. The truth is, most adult cats are totally lactose-intolerant, meaning they can’t digest milk properly and will likely experience vomiting and diarrhea if they consume too much dairy.

Cats Purr When Happy

This is another half-truth. Cats may purr when happy or content, yes, but experts believe that some cats purr to convey a variety of other emotions. These may include anger, stress, and even aggression!
