Common Cat Toxins in Your Home

There are a few common items that our feline friends need to be wary of; make sure you keep your cat safe from these toxins! Your Rochester, NY veterinarian tells you more below.

Did you know that many varieties of the lily flower—tiger lilies, Japanese lilies, stargazer lilies, and many more—are highly toxic to cats? Remove lilies from your home and landscaping if necessary; always check through bouquets in your home to make sure they don’t contain lilies.

Human Foods

Plenty of human foods, including chocolate, candy, gum, grapes, raisins, salt, fatty foods, caffeine, and alcohol, aren’t safe for your cat. It’s imperative that you don’t leave harmful substances out on the countertop or table, where cats may be able to gain access.

Milk, while not toxic, will likely cause an upset stomach, vomiting, or diarrhea in many cats. That’s because most adult cats are lactose-intolerant! The only liquid your cat needs for good health is fresh water.

Flea Medications

One of the most common cat toxins is flea medications made for dogs, as dog medicines are too strong for many cats. Don’t get the two mixed up!
