Common Toxic Houseplants

Various types of plants and flowers can actually prove toxic to our cats and dogs. Here, your Daly City, CA vet tells you about just three of the most common.

Lilies

Most members of the lily family are toxic to cats, and some may be toxic to our canine friends as well. They can cause increased salivation, vomiting, lethargy, and even kidney failure if left untreated. Since lilies are commonly part of bouquets, they’re especially dangerous simply because of their prevalence.

Jade Plant

The jade plant, commonly known as the jade tree, Japanese rubber plant, or Chinese rubber plant, is toxic to cats and dogs. The exact toxic agent isn’t known, but depression, uncoordinated movements, and vomiting are likely to occur if a pet ingests too much of the plant.

Aloe Plant

Aloe plants are quite common, and contain a toxin called aloin that dogs and cats shouldn’t have. It can cause irritation in the mouth, vomiting, and blood in the urine.

If you have any of these plants in your home, remove them right away. Talk to your veterinarians Daly City, CA and check the ASPCA’s list of toxic plants to learn about other varieties of dangerous plant life.
