Exotic Pets for Kids

Thinking of getting a pet for your child, but not ready for the commitment of a dog or cat? An exotic pet may be the answer you’re looking for. Here, your Indianapolis, IN vet tells you about three good exotic pets for kids.

Hermit Crabs

Hermit crabs are extremely easy to take care of and don’t require daily attention or supervision. Plus, it’s fascinating to look at their varied shell colors and patterns. Of course, hermit crabs can’t exactly be cuddled or played with, but they can make excellent “starter” pets nonetheless.

Anole Lizards

Anole lizards are small, easy to care for and feed, and fun to interact with. They can move fairly fast, so supervision is required when they’re out of their cage. In addition, anoles don’t come with a long-term commitment; they typically live between two and five years, so they can make good pets for kids just starting out in animal care.

Leopard Geckos

Leopard geckos are often considered the quintessential “starter” lizard. They’re larger than anoles and have more exacting care requirements, but they can make great pets for responsible children ready to take on the challenge.
