Many of us walk our dogs at night; it may be the only time that works with your schedule, or your dog may need a walk before bedtime in order to sleep soundly. Here, your Scottsdale, AZ vet gives you a few safety tips when walking Fido at nighttime.
Use a Leash
It’s a good rule of thumb to use a leash whenever you are walking your dog, and it’s especially helpful at night. When it’s dark out, you’ll want to be able to control your dog as best as you can if they dart after a car or wild animal.
Stick to Sidewalks
Whenever possible, use sidewalks. At the very least, choose wide streets with substantial shoulder areas. It’s much harder for motorists to see you and your pooch in the nighttime, so minimizing all the risk you can is a good idea.
Wear Reflective Clothing
Both you and your dog should wear reflective clothing. For dogs, this may mean a reflective leash, collar, booties, or even a specialized vest. You should don a hat or jacket with reflective strips sewn in.
