How to Tell if Your Bird Isn’t Feeling Well

If you own a bird, it’s up to you to monitor their health. Do you know how to tell when your feathered friend isn’t feeling well? Below, your Happy Valley, OR veterinarian tells you about three common signs of illness in birds.

Cere Problems

Your bird’s cere is the area just above their beak that houses the nostrils; essentially, it’s your bird’s nose. If you see discharge coming from this area or if you notice dried crusts, inflammation, or anything else out of the ordinary, let your veterinarian know. It could be a sign of respiratory infection or other serious health issues.

Ruffled Feathers

Although birds do ruffle their feathers occasionally, a bird who has kept the feathers ruffled constantly for longer than 24 hours may be experiencing health problems. Set up an appointment at your vet’s office if you’ve noticed this behavior from your pet.

Loss of Appetite

A loss of appetite is a bad sign in almost any pet, birds included. If you’ve noticed more of your pet’s food in the dish than usual, it might be worth a professional opinion.
