Keeping Pets Healthy in Hot Weather

Generally speaking, our pets aren’t well-equipped to handle hot weather. After all, they’re wearing a fur coat that they can’t take off! Use these tips from a Katy, TX vet to keep your pet cool when the temperatures rise.

Hydration and Shade

Rule number one for keeping your pet safe in hot weather: provide them with plenty of cool, fresh water to keep them hydrated. Check the bowl periodically to see if it needs refilling. If your pet spends time outdoors, make sure there is adequate shade for them to cool off in. It’s a good idea to place a water dish in this area, as well.

Paw Care Tips

When a pet lingers on hot asphalt surfaces in the summertime, the paw pads can be burned or blister painfully. Do your best to avoid blacktop driveways and parking lots when you can—your pet will be much happier walking in cool grass.

Pest Control

Ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, worms… there is no shortage of pests that can harm your pet during hot weather. Talk to your vet to get Fido or Fluffy set up with the appropriate preventative medicines.
