Three Tips for Your Pet’s Dental Health

Our pets can’t exactly brush their teeth every morning or gurgle with mouthwash. That means that it’s up to you to maintain your companion’s great dental health! Here, your vet Sugar Land, TX tells you about three quick steps to make sure your pet’s dental health stays in good shape.

Mouth Checks

Try to sit down with your pet about once a week or so to give the mouth a thorough checkup. Gently peel back your pet’s lips with one hand, and examine the gum line and teeth. If you see anything abnormal—excessive plaque build-up, inflammation or swelling, bleeding, misaligned teeth, etc.—let your vet know right away.

Chew Toys

Did you know that chew toys are an important tool for good dental health? That’s because they scrape away a lot of the loose plaque along your pet’s outer tooth surfaces and on the gum line, removing it before it can harden into tartar. Provide your pet with plenty of chew toys!

Brushing Sessions

Brush your pet’s teeth at home on a weekly basis; use a canine- or feline-formulated toothpaste and a pet toothbrush.
